I’ve heard authors say that the title comes first and the story flows from it. I’ve heard authors say that the initial idea and the title go hand in hand, inextricably entwined.

This is just not the case for me. I write my story, and then I polish it up, and then I get ready to submit it to my publisher, and then I realized, “Oh no, I still need a title.” And then I stare at the story for awhile. Dude. I can't title anything either. If it were up to me everything I wrote would be called like "Art History Paper" or "Gay Porn Thing, Some Penis." Up through grad school I literally turned things in without titles. It's hard, very hard.

Yeah, my thesis is just called "A Reassessment of Arthur O'Shaughnessy". and now for the book, it's just going to be "Arthur O'Shaughnessy". NO creativity there.

The thing with that is, if there's no other recent book about the guy you might as well want to communicate that you're the definitive account.

We had that problem with the fanfic Let Us Hear You, Let Us Feel You. Because The Hydra was just not a good title. *LOL* But we turned to music, lyrics for inspiration. Something to use, maybe?
